CHONGQING CITY - RESTAURANTS

Lao Shu Huoguo , Bayi Lu. An inexpensive, off-street hotpot option if the weather is foul; friendly staff and decent portions.

Lao Sichuan , Wuyi Lu. A good, long-established restaurant, offering both classic courses and side dishes such as preserved eggs, dry-fried beef, chilli-braised frogs and eels, and green beans with garlic.

Luohan Si , Luohan Si Jie. Temple restaurant with first-rate vegetarian cuisine.

Minzhu Meibaocheng , Bayi Lu. Busiest of many such inexpensive canteens in this street; sit in cheap plastic seats and devour great portions of shuijiao, spring rolls, noodles and soups.

Yizhishi , Zourong Lu. A popular place for Chongqing's full range of cheap and excellent snacks - best in this line are the range of cold vegetables and chilli braised meats. Everything is on show, so order by pointing.

Zeng Xiao Rong , Zuorong Lu. Similar to the nearby Yizhishi, but with the emphasis on steamed or "potsticker" jiaozi with chilli sauce, glutinous rice balls, and other dumplings; decor includes concrete trees, wooden booths and chirping budgies.
