The town walls, tamped earth ramparts, have been heavily destroyed and there's no path along them, but they are a useful landmark and a boundary line that serves to divide the city into a downtown and a suburban section. Inside the walls, Kaifeng is quite an attractive place, with a sprinkling of good-looking buildings close to each other along streets that have a more human scale and are freer of traffic than most Chinese towns.
