The southern end of Beijing Lu is Kunming's nocturnal underbelly, with a disproportionate number of unattached women hanging around outside tiny, dingy clubs, with a few foreigner/student bars beginning to pep up the city's otherwise bland nightlife . The city has several operatic troupes and indigenous entertainments which include huadeng, a lantern dance. Indoor performances are sadly infrequent, but there are often informal shows at the weekend outside the Workers' Cultural Hall and in Cuihu Park. Keep an eye on local newspapers (or ask at your hotel) for similar activities at the Yunnan Arts Theatre on Dongfeng Xi Lu.
