Luoyang is spread east-west between the Luo
River and the rail line, with the old city in
the east, the more modern conurbation of
factories and residential blocks in the west.
Zhongzhou Zhong Lu is the main thoroughfare,
crossing the length of the city. A T-junction is
formed at the centre of town where this street
meets the main road heading south from the train
station, Jinguyuan Lu.
Luoyang airport , 20km north of town,
is tiny and served by a bus that drops you off
at the CAAC office behind the train station. The
train station itself is a busy junction
on the line between Xi'an and Zhengzhou, and
it's a centre of operations for most visitors as
the bus station is opposite, tours to the
sights leave from the concourse, and the budget
hotels are nearby. However, it's situated in the
town's northern extremity, a long walk to
anywhere exciting or to the prettier parts of
town.
The station is the place to pick up most city
bus connections, with another clutch of
routes beginning from the Xiguan roundabout in
the east of the city, too far out to be handy
for much, although you can get to the Baima Si
from here. From the train station, trolleybus
#102 and bus #2 go south down Jinguyuan Lu,
turning west along Zhongzhou Zhong Lu at the
central T-junction; bus #5 from the station
takes the eastern fork, passing the Xiguan
roundabout. Taxis , which can be hailed
on the streets, are plentiful, with a ¥5 basic
rate.
