SICHUAN PROVINCE

Sichuan Province, an inland province in Southwest China, is surrounded by the Qingzang plateau in the west and the Three Gorges and the Yangtze River to the east. With a total area of 485000 square kilometers, Sichuan is the largest and one of the most inaccessible provinces in the nation.

Sichuan is famous for its amazing collection of wildlife and diverse terrain. Over one- fifth of the nation's rare animals and plants are found here, situated amongst lush bamboo forest or growing on harsh mountain terrain. Jiuzhaiguo is home to some of China's most naturally beautiful and breath- taking scenery. Emeishan is another great spot to take in some wild scenery and catch a glimpse of unusual wildlife. China's favorite baby, the panda can be seen at the Panda Reserve outside Chengdu itself, if you are not lucky enough to spot one in the wild.

The western region of China is also renowned for its wealth of culture and particularly impressive religious relics. Over 4000 years of prosperity and isolation from the major cities in China have formed a unique local culture in Sichuan known as Bashu Culture. Sichuan is populated by 52 minority groups from throughout China and the interaction between the nationalities during the past 3000 years has made a rich cultural and historical heritage here. Sichuan's most famous religious sight, the huge and impressive Great Buddha in Leshan must be seen to be believed! Chengdu is also home to some interesting temples and monasteries, and is a pleasant city to wander and explore.

On top of all this, Sichuan is also renowned for its HOT and SPICY food which is hugely popular throughout China. Authentic Sichuan cuisine is widely available and any visitor to the province must brave the chilies, grab a glass of water or beer and indulge in a fiery feast here!
