Right across the road from the
Hongshan Hotel
is the best of the region's
John's Information
Café branches, pleasantly located in a small
park - you can sit outside under the trellises and
almost forget that you are in the middle of a
booming city. Pancakes, apple pie, coffee, toast and
omelettes are all available, as well as half-decent
Chinese food. On the same side of the street as
John's,
four doors down towards the
Holiday Inn, is a
great little Chinese restaurant, cheap, clean and
friendly, though with no English menu. For
air-conditioned luxury, the
Holiday Inn
itself does buffet breakfasts and lunches where you
can eat as much as you like for ¥95 and ¥85
repectively. The set dinner menu is ¥48. If you're
staying around the station, head for the Uigur
restaurant just west of the
Xinjiang Hotel.
It's loud and boisterous, but you can't fault the
cheap food. More Uigur fare is on sale at streetside
market areas. One central place is on Renmin Lu,
just to the west of Xinhua Lu. Another, slightly
more wholesome, is the covered market just north of
the post office, or try the Erdaoqiao market (take
bus #101 heading south down Xinhua Bei Lu). There's
another outside the Hongshan Department Store,
within walking distance of the
Hongshan Hotel.
For upmarket Chinese food, try one of the cluster of
restaurants on Minzhu Lu, close to the
Laiyuan
Hotel.
