The largest concentration of
city buses is
found outside the train station at the northern
end of Jiefang Lu. There are other clusters just
outside the South Gate, and at the southern end of
Yanta Lu, just north of the Big Goose Pagoda.
The city also has five trolleybus lines,
which all run east-west across the city; most
useful is trolleybus #101, which runs south from a
terminus outside the station, down Jiefang Lu,
then turns west on to Dong Dajie, runs past the
Bell Tower, and continues through the west gate on
to Fenghao Lu, coming close to the CAAC office.
Plentiful red taxis cruise the streets
and can be hailed anywhere. Most destinations
within the city come inside the ¥6 minimum rate.
Note that a rule obliges you to pay an extra ¥2.5
on top of what the meter says - a sign on the
dashboard explains this, but as it's only in
Chinese, foreigners often think they're being
ripped off.
As the streets are wide and flat, cycling
is a good way to get around Xi'an. All the major
streets have cycle lanes, controlled at major
intersections by officials with flags. There are,
however, few bike parks, and most people run the
risk of a rarely enforced ¥10 fine by leaving
their bikes padlocked to railings. Make sure you
have a good security chain, especially if your
bike is anything other than a downbeat Flying
Pigeon. For rental places, see p.256.
The yellow city maps available
everywhere (¥3) are generally reliable and hold a
lot of information, including bus and tram routes.
