Since Yangzhou is not yet served by rail (plans
are afoot to build a link from Nanjing by 2001),
you are almost certain to arrive either at the
main East bus station on Dujiang Nan Lu in
the south of the city, or at the remote West
bus station , connected to the East station by
bus #8. Generally speaking, the very frequent
buses to and from Zhenjiang and Nanjing use the
West station, while longer-distance buses,
including long-distance sleepers, use the East
station. It's possible to visit Yangzhou on a day
trip from Nanjing or Zhenjiang, but plan your
itinerary carefully; both stations close at dark,
so after sunset you're stranded. The nearest train
station is at Zhenjiang, though it's usually
possible to book train tickets in Yangzhou at the
main bus station and at the (now disused) canal
ferry terminal on the northern bank of the canal,
north of the bus station. The nearest airport is
at Nanjing - tickets can be booked at major
hotels.
